International City
The International City, one Nakheel’s first developments that started in 2003, can be found along the Dubai-Hatta road near the Dubai Central Fruit and Vegetable Market, the Dubai International Airport, the Festival City Complex and the Uptown Mirdif districts over an eight hundred acre plot of land. Nakheel is most well known for developing the Palms Trilogy, three man made islands made in the shape of a date palm tree.
International City was made resemble the intricately woven carpets that the Middle East is famous for, and is geared to become a hotspot tourist destination. Nakheel even made their own replica of the Forbidden City, which can originally be found in China, inside the International City to make it even more attractive for tourists. The International City itself is divided into five districts: the Central District, Dubai Design Centre, the Dragon Mart, the Residential District, the Lakes District and the Forbidden City.
Inside this “micro-city” is a veritable hodge podge of different cultures, a trademark that makes the International City truly international. The Central District, which serves as the heart of all the International City’s activities, covers an area of over thirty-four plots which are under construction on twenty-one hectares of land consisting of retail outlets and basement parking for its tenants. Meanwhile In the Residential District, there are more than four hundred buildings with residential and retail units, catering to over sixty thousand people of seventy-five different nationalities. Divided into ten precincts namely the Emirates Precinct, the China Precinct, the Russia Precinct, the Italy Precinct, the France Precinct, the England Precinct, the Morocco Precinct, the Spain Precinct, the Greece Precinct, and the Persia Precinct, most of the residential are sold out. At another district called the Forbidden City, the residential units will range from studio and bedroom apartments designed with a Chinese theme.
